Painting white on a dark ceiling paint?

my mom and dad agreed that i can redo my room and they agreed i can paint it purple. however, i want my ceiling and doors to be a darker purple. my mom says its okay but my dad said no about the ceiling. he said when he eventually sells the house, he wants to have a white ceiling because thats like the standard color. so he doesnt want it to be dark because we wont be able to paint white over dark purple? is this true? and is there anyway i can paint it dark purple and then do something when the time comes to make the white not have any purple showing through??Painting white on a dark ceiling paint?
In my experience (9 years as a painter), you can definitely cover dark colors with lighter ones. Here's how:

Don't be shy about buying a good primer. I liked Sherwin Williams but, I'm sure there are better ones out there now.

Give your dark colored ceiling a good coat of primer and see how well that covers. You may need to use a 2nd coat of primer before painting it but, it will look really good when you are done.

Good luck!Painting white on a dark ceiling paint?
You can have it dark purple but when you repaint you are going to have to primer like a bad dog.

It will probably take one coat of primer and two coats of white to mask it...

You have to think, is it worth it to you?
well you can.. just that you would have to give more coats of white to cover the purple... using acrylic emultion white it would be easy
Dark colors are hard to cover over. He'll need to put a good heavy primer over it first, then the white. Might need to put on a couple of coats to cover it. Lots of time and work! Instead of painting it, what about covering it with cloth? Had a friend that used an old parachute he bought at a army surplus store
No doubt about it. You can make it white as light again. It's just going to be a little harder. When the time comes, you will need to put a primer such as ';Kilz'; to prevent bleed through, let it dry, paint it, look at it and decide if it needs another coat. If so do it and repeat until it is as white as snow.
