How do you wash soot from agas fireplace off the walls and ceiling paint?

My mother used a mixture of vinegar and water, it cleaned EVERYTHING!!

To remove the soot coating on a painted wall go to the hardware store and buy a quart of odorless kerosene and wet down a cotton rag ( old T shirt is best) and wipe the soot off.





The ceiling is another problem. I assume its a texture and it has not been latex painted. So you are pretty much stuck in in sealing that damaged area over with a primer and then painting the whole ceiling.





Be careful on the ceiling, if you try washing it down you will smooth out the texture so go the prime and paint route.
