Can I ';spot'; paint my ceiling to cover the waterstains?

In my living room, there are some waterstains along one of the exterior walls. We haven't been able to figure out what is causing this. However, the stains are really bothering me. Can I paint over the stains without painting the entire ceiling? Can I ';spot'; paint my ceiling to cover the waterstains?
if this problem is bothering you then touch them up till you find and fix the problem. to me it sounds like you are having ice and water back up under your sofit likely from too much ice and snow on your roof. get a professional roofer in to have a look at the problem and when it is fixed then repaint your ceiling. someone suggested kilz to cover over your water stains that will work but there are many different kilz products and the only one that will work is the shellac based. my suggestion would be is to get a spray can of either white shellac or the one with white pigment in it. spray 2 - 3 coats on. shellac dries fast so you can do this over and hours time. then apply 1 - 2 coats of an alkyd based primer. after that apply 1 - 2 coats of an alkyd ceiling flat on your entire ceiling. please do not use a water based product. even though you may not see other water stains they can still appear when you apply a water based paint. this should solve your problem. Can I ';spot'; paint my ceiling to cover the waterstains?
You can try, but due to light exposure and dirt, it might not match, the bigger the spot, the more likely you'll have to paint the whole thing, and water stains will show, so you'll need to prime them as well. water stains will also keep showing until you fix the leak.
First, you need to repair the area where the water is coming from. To paint over the ceiling paint, you need to use Kilz and put 2 or 3 coats on it before painting. You may or may not be able to just spot paint. Try it and see. The worst that can happen is you will need to paint the entire ceiling.
Use a stain blocker before you paint. Kilz is a good one. I'd get that leak fixed before the ceiling starts sagging. You may as well paint the whole ceiling if your gonna paint the spot before the leak is fixed.
Honestly there is no sense painting till the leak is taken care of. You need to find it soon before it creates a huge reno problem. You cannot spot paint the spot..it will show through and will not match the rest anyway.
